Joan Margaret Shafer

SOUTH BEND, IN Mrs. Joan Margaret
Shafer, 80, of Hawthorne Drive, passed away unexpectedly
following an illness at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday evening, Dec. 3, in
her residence. Joan was born on June 10, 1922, in LaPorte, Ind.,
to the late William H. and Mary Genevieve (Lane) Vanderbosch.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Vanderbosch
of Lake Worth, Fla.
On Nov. 22, 1945, in South Bend, Ind., she
married Francis C. Shafer, who survives of South Bend. Joan
worked at the phone company before her marriage but after she
devoted all of her time to being a very good homemaker. Surviving
along with her husband are their two daughters, Linda S. Shafer
of Granger, Ind., and Sandra L. Plummer of New Palestine,
Ind.; four grandchildren, Danielle Farr of Southport,
Ind., Eric Farr of Mishawaka, Ind., Ryan Plummer and Jessica
Plummer, both of New Palestine; one great-grandson, Timothy Farr
of Mishawaka; and by three sisters, Mary Brown of
Hinsdale, Ill., Betty Powell of Mesa, Ariz., and Suzie
(Don) Agostino of San Marcos, Calif.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic
Church, with Rev. Terry Fisher, pastor, officiating. Friends may
call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the McGann Funeral Homes,
University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road at Ironwood, South
Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park,
Granger, Ind. She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, a 50-year
member of the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Sigma Phi Gamma
International Sorority, a former member of the Christ Child
Society, and was a 1940 graduate of Riley High School. Memorial
donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
