Brother Vitus Schwartz CSC, 99, died
Thursday at Dujarie House after an illness. He entered the
Congregation of Holy Cross July 6, 1912; made temporary
profession on July 6, 1914; and took his final vows on June 27,
1920. He was born Sept. 9, 1894 in Massillon, Ohio. He was the
oldest living Brother of the Congregation. He began his teaching
ministry at Holy Cross College in New Orleans in 1920. He taught
at Sacred Heart College, Watertown, Wis.; Central Catholic High
School, Fort Wayne; and St. Edwards Military Academy,
Austin, Texas. For 26 years he served as a canvasser for
the Ave Maria Press. Later he was assigned to assist at the
Dujarie Press at Notre Dame. In 1968 he became a staff member of
Columba Hall at Notre Dame. He retired in 1981, remaining at
Columba Hall. In December 1991 he moved to Dujarie House.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Holy
Cross Brothers Center. A mass of the resurrection will be at 7:30
p.m. with burial at 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Cemetery at the
Brothers Center.
