Reverend Frederick Anthony Schroeder

CARMEL -- A mass of Christian Burial will be held for the Reverend Frederick Anthony Schroeder, 86, at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Carmel, where he was senior associate pastor.

He died Monday, March 1, 2004.

 

Fr. Fred was ordained a Roman Catholic priest by Bishop J.F. Noll in Fort Wayne on May 30, 1942.

 

Fr. Fred was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Mishawaka, to Fred and Luella Gard Schroeder.

 

He was a 1936 graduate cum laude of St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer, received a Master of Divinity from St. Meinrad Seminary and a Master of Arts in Liturgical Studies from the University of Notre Dame. Not only did he enjoy opera, but also sports. While at St. Joseph's College, he shot two holes-in-one, during the same season. Fr. Fred was a student of Jungian Psychology and was an author of "Every Day is a Gift," "Spiritual Direction for Today's Catholics," and "A Little Holy Disorder." He was devoted to the study of the Scriptures and attended summer Scripture seminars at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Mundelein, Ill., for more than 25 years. He was active in bringing people back to the church, leading a door-to-door evangelism campaign and serving as a spiritual director.

 

He has served as associate pastor to churches in Elwood and Kokomo, and as pastor to churches in Monterey, Union City, Remington and Logansport. Father was also diocesan director for vocations. He was a member of #561 Knights of Columbus, St. Francis of Assisi Council.

 

He is survived by his brother, Raymond C. Schroeder; sister, Joan VanHuffel; nieces and nephews, Don, Dick and Greg Schroeder, Suzi Collins, Danny and David Tiedge, Alan VanHuffel, Sheryl Nix and Diane Bradley; 24 grandnieces and nephews; 7 great-grandnieces and nephews; cousins, Dr. Justin Arata, Dr. James Arata, Dr. Lucian Arata, Jane Coleman, Maria Ann Bueche, Nancy Cleghorn, Larry Schroeder, Adelade Caleal, Agnes Laux, Mary Michael Donahue and Helen Schumaker.

 

He was preceded in death by his sister, Angela Tiedge and nephew, Martin VanHuffel.

 

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday in the church with the Liturgy for Reception of the Body, and will continue until 9 p.m. Additional visitation will be Sunday from 7 a.m. until 7:30 p.m., at which time a vigil service will be held. The wake will continue with an overnight vigil in the Main Church. Entombment will be Tuesday in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Ill.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church for outdoor stations of the cross on St. Elizabeth Seton Parish grounds.
