SOUTH BEND - Raymond H. Schrader, 82, of South Bend, passed away
at 8:19 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in Hospice House, South
Bend after sustaining a serious injury due to a fall. He was born
December 12, 1927, in Mishawaka, IN, the son of Otto R. and
Naamah L. (Schearer). Ray was a graduate of Lakeville High
School, who went on to study accounting at Indiana University,
South Bend. During his career, he worked for the Saint Joseph
Bank, Rockwell Standard Corporation, and was the Assistant
Comptroller of the Indiana Toll Road from 1965 until his
retirement in 1992. On June 11, 1950 in Lakeville, IN, he married
the former Arlene E. Grimmius, who survives. In addition to his
wife, Ray is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Rob) Wojtkowski of
South Bend; his son, David A. (Pamela) Schrader of South Bend;
five grandchildren, John Schrader of Mishawaka, Jacqueline
Schrader of West Lafayette, IN, Sarah (David) James-Wilkinson of
Sandy, UT, Chris James of South Bend and Lauren Wojtkowski of
South Bend; sisters, Ruby Mutti of Wakarusa and Marion Moody of
South Bend; as well as eighteen nieces and nephews. Ray was
preceded in death by brothers in law, Harold Mutti and Virgil
Moody. Ray was a 55 year member of Epworth Memorial United
Methodist Church, where, over the years, he served as Head Usher,
President of the United Methodist Men and chairman of numerous
committees. For many years, he was also a Lay Member of the North
Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. Ray was the
Past President of the Clay Township Lions Club, Vice President of
the Lions Board of Directors and also served many years as a Boy
Scout Troop Leader, offering guidance to many young men during
their formative years. He was a fanatical Notre Dame fan, serving
for over twenty years as an usher at the football games. A
veteran of the U.S. Army, Ray served in Europe during the Korean
War. Ray was known as someone who was there to offer a helping
hand, for any reason, at any time, in any place, to his family
and many friends, as well as the stranger in need of aid. Highly
committed to his family and deeply loved, he will be greatly
missed. Funeral services for Raymond Schrader will be 11:00 a.m.
Monday, May 24, 2010 at Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church,
2404 Lincolnway West, South Bend. Rev. Dexter Garman, Pastor of
Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, and Rev. Lauren Hall,
Associate Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will follow in Bremen Cemetery. Friends may visit with the
family from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2010, at the Palmer
Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend,
and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Expressions of
sympathy on behalf of Ray may be offered to Epworth Memorial
