Salvatore Schirripa, 83, passed away of natural causes at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center on Thursday morning, February 23, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. Salvatore was born April 17, 1922, in Locri (Reggio Calabria), Italy, to Rosa and Giuseppe (Scarfo') Schirripa.
On October 6, 1946, he married his wife, Maria, who survives along with their six children, Giuseppe, Domenico (Kim Thompson), Anthony, Rose (Luciano Parisi), Carmela (George Macri) and Gerry. He is also survived by a sister, Concettina LaRosa, and a brother, Giovanni Schirripa, who live in Italy, 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Salvatore served in the Italian Army during World War II and enjoyed sharing his war-time stories.
In 1966, he and his family moved to South Bend. He was employed by the City of South Bend Street Department for 22 years. After retiring, he developed a love for gardening, which he took great pride and joy in. He also enjoyed cooking for his family and watching his grandchildren grow.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today, February 27, in Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 26, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a Rosary was said at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Corpus Christi Parish, 2801 Corpus Christi Drive, South Bend, IN 46628.
Salvatore will be dearly missed by all who knew him, especially his family and friends. The Hickey Funeral Homes 17131 Cleveland Road is in charge of arrangements.
