SOUTH BEND - Dorothy (Hassan) Schiller, 93, community leader and volunteer, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at her residence in South Bend. Mrs. Schiller, daughter of Fannie and Isidor Hassan, was born August 21, 1915, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She married Dr. Herbert A. Schiller on February 6, 1947. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 1, 1992; a daughter, Susan Joy Schiller Leibow on August 12, 2005; and two sisters. Mrs. Schiller is survived by daughter, Carol Ann Schiller Kempler and her husband, Dr. Norman A. Kempler of Fort Wayne; and her grandchildren, Mark Ira Leibow of San Diego, Amy Felice Kempler of Fishers, Indiana, and Craig Schiller Kempler and his wife, Carrie Susan Kempler of Chicago. Mrs. Schiller attended the University of Illinois and received her BA degree in sociology from Indiana University, Bloomington. She was a life member of Alpha Epsilon Phi, national social sorority, and served on its board as national rush chair. As an active leader, Mrs. Schiller was president of the Indiana State Medical Alliance and was on the national board of the American Medical Association Alliance, serving as chair of the long-range planning committee. From 1968-1969 she was president of the St. Joseph County Medical Auxiliary and also secretary of both the St. Joseph County and the Indiana State Medical Alliances. Mrs. Schiller was an avid community volunteer. She served on many boards including the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, the Friends of the Snite Museum of Art of Notre Dame University, the Women's Art League, the St. Joseph Medical Center Auxiliary and the Memorial Hospital Medical Alliance of which she was a past secretary. She was a founding member of the St. Joseph County Hearing and Speech Auxiliary, and chair of the St. Joseph County March of Dimes in 1954. Dorothy Schiller was a board member and former Trustee of Temple Beth-El Sisterhood, was selected as Woman of Valor by the Temple Beth-El Sisterhood, and was named Woman of the Year by its sisterhood. She was a life member and board member of Hadassah and was a member of B'nai B'rith Women. Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday, November 23, in Temple Beth-El, 305 W. Madison, South Bend, IN 46601, with calling one hour prior to the services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy and Dr. Herbert Schiller Cantorial Music Fund of Temple Beth-El; to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to any charity of the donor's choice. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
