Michael T. Schelstraete, 91, of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away after an illness at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1. Mr. Schelstraete was born on Nov. 9, 1907, in Mishawaka, as the son of the late Henry and Romaine (Fiers) Schelstraete. He was a lifelong area resident.

On Nov. 2, 1940, in South Bend, Ind., he married the former Mary Toth, who preceded him in death on Aug. 19, 1994. Mr. Schelstraete was also preceded in death by a brother, Emiel Schelstraete. He is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Richard) Sienicki of Crown Point, Ind.; a grandson, Andrew Hutchison; a granddaughter, Catherine Sienicki; two sisters, Martha Rodts and Erma Schelstraete, both of Mishawaka; and by a brother, Oscar (Esther) Schelstraete, also of Mishawaka. Mr. Schelstraete was a foreman at the former Uniroyal for 43 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mishawaka, and was a lifetime member of DiAmici's. He was also a charter member of the Michiana Kennel "Beagle Club".

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 3, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 4, in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Elden Miller officiating.
