Sister M. Charles Schauers CSC, 72, a
longtime area schoolteacher and former religious superior at
Saint Marys Convent, died at 7:18 p.m. Saturday at the
convent after an illness. She was born Ethel Catherine Schauers
on Oct. 13, 1917, in Chicago. She entered the Congregation of the
Sisters of the Holy Cross on July 2, 1936; was received as a
novice Feb. 2, 1937; and professed her final vows on Feb. 2,
1939. She was a graduate of St. Marys College and the
former St. Marys Academy. She taught at St. Patricks
School; St. Marys Campus School and schools in Elkhart,
Michigan City and East Chicago. She also taught in Morris, Peoria
and Cairo, Ill. Her 44-year teaching career ended in 1974.
From 1974 to 1980 she was in charge of
ministry to senior citizens of Starke County. In 1980 she assumed
the position of ministry to the elderly at St. Johns
Medical Center in Anderson, Ind. In 1981 she was assigned as
religious superior of St. Marys Convent. From 1984 to 1989
she was in charge of geriatric services at St. Johns
Medical Center, retiring in 1989. She received her masters
degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1958 and her
certificate in gerontology in 1973.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at
the Church of Loretto with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery,
St. Marys. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the
convent, where a wake will be at 7 p.m.
