South Bend Tribune 4/21/2005
Margaret Helen (Kizer) Schalliol passed away on April 17, 2005, while residing at Southfield Village, South Bend. She was 87 years old. Margaret, who was a lifelong resident of Mishawaka, was the daughter of Earl and Charlotte Kisser, and was the oldest child of 12 children. Because of the Depression era and the number of mouths to feed, Margaret began working immediately following her graduation from Mishawaka High School, even though she had hoped and been encouraged by many to attend college.
In 1940, she married Robert E. Schalliol, also a lifelong resident of Mishawaka. He preceded her in death in December 2003.
In addition to working for Penn-Harris-Madison School City and later for Burcliff Industries, Margaret was an avid volunteer. She led Camp Fire Girls groups and was a Cub Scout leader, taught Sunday School and was active in the American Field Service program, even hosting two AFS students. Her home was always open to her children's friends, and "Miss Maggie" and her husband were always available to them for caring friendship and advice. They even took in two young girls over the years. At age 80, she was volunteering in classrooms in the Mishawaka schools.
Margaret was an extremely artistic person, and she did all types of needlework. She made wedding gowns for friends and for years sewed ballet costumes for a dance studio in South Bend. She studied calligraphy and her many friends and family members always received beautifully addressed cards and letters. She and her husband loved to play bridge and other games of cards, and Margaret bowled in a church league for many years. She helped organize the class reunions for the Mishawaka High School class of 1935. However, Margaret's greatest joy was her family, and she was so proud of her children, grandsons and great-grandsons. She was loved dearly by so many.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Christina Gibson (Terry) of Burlington, Kentucky; her son, Charles Schalliol (Jenny) of Carmel, Indiana; four grandsons, Brian Gibson (Darci), Scott Gibson (Joanna), David Schalliol (Jennifer) and Jonathan Schalliol (Katy); and two great-grandsons, Nathan and Conner Gibson. A third great-grandchild is expected in June. Margaret has five surviving brothers, Jack Kizer, Richard Kizer, Norman Kizer, Jerry Kizer and Lanny Kizer, and one surviving sister, Nancy Kizer. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call and visit from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23, in Saint Andrew's United Church of Christ, 320 East 4th Street, Mishawaka, and a memorial service will follow in the church sanctuary at 3:00 p.m. Contributions may be made to St. Andrew's United Church of Christ.
