Lakeville, IN Glen B. "Pete" Schafer, 85 years old, residing at St. Paul's Retirement Community in South Bend, formerly of 21400 Osborne Road in Lakeville for 65 years, passed away at 12:15 P.M. on Monday, October 2, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital in South Bend from natural causes. Mr. Schafer was born on September 19, 1915, in Lakeville, IN, to the late Elton and Pearl (Baughman) Schafer. He has been a lifelong area resident.
On November 7, 1936, in Lakeville, he married Lois M. Donathen, who preceded in death on February 6, 1990. Also preceding in death were one sister, Mary Gilbert, and two brothers, Ralph and Roy Schafer. Survivors include one daughter, Patty A. (Calvin) Ewing of Lakeville; three sons, Larry L. (Phyllis) Schafer of South Bend, Harley E. Schafer of Lakeville, and Roger A. (Joyce) Schafer, also of Lakeville; 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Hayes of Mishawaka; and three brothers, Howard Schafer of Bremen, IN, Charles Schafer of Lakeville, and Lyle Schafer of Napa Valley, CA.
Mr. Schafer was a member of the Lakeville Lions Club, Indiana Farm Bureau, Gleaner Life Insurance Society, National Grange Society, past board member of the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair for 12 years and State 4-H Fair for 7 years, past president and board member of the Hoosier Milk Association. He was also a member and served on the board of the following associations: Pure Milk Association, A.M.P.I. Dairy Association, St. Joseph County Dairy Council and National Dairy Council, American and National Dairy Association, National Milk Producers. Mr. Schafer was also active in Republican politics and a delegate of the state convention for several years.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 6, 2000, at the First Brethren Church, 4909 S. Ironwood, South Bend, IN. Rev. Larry Baker, pastor of the church, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Fair Cemetery in North Liberty. Friends may visit with the family from 3-8 P.M. on Thursday, October 5th, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 314 S. Michigan Street, Lakeville, and one hour prior to services in the church on Friday. Contributions in memory of Glen B. "Pete" Schafer may be donated to the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair.
