Lois C. Scannell

Lois C. Scannell, 97, of South Bend,
died December 30 in her home. Born to Edith and Bruce Dimmick on October
21, 1904 in Wilkes Barre, Pa., she had lived in her Marquette
Ave. home since 1934.
A graduate of East Straudsburg State
Normal School in Pennsylvania, she taught in the Ashley PA
Schools for two years before being married in 1926 and moving to South
Bend in 1928. In the 1930's and 1940's she taught Physical
Education and Dance classes on a part-time basis at St. Joseph
and Holy Cross Elementary Schools and dance classes in her home.
Beginning in the 1950's she devoted her artistic and teaching
talents to painting. A long time member of the Northern Indiana
Artists, her prize winning paintings have been featured in many
area exhibits. She taught painting classes, primarily for the
South Bend Recreation Department, the YWCA and Forever Learning
from 1961 until the late 1990s.
She was a member of Sacred Heart
Parish at Notre Dame.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, John A. in 1973 and by a son, John B. in 1984. She is
survived by her daughter, Patricia Hogoboom, of Parchment, Michigan;
a son, Robert, of State College, PA, 11 grandchildren and 22
great grandchildren.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated
in Christ the King Church on Friday, January 4, at 11 a.m.
Friends will be received in the church before the services from 10
to 11 a.m., Friday. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery in
South Bend.
