MISHAWAKA - Lawrence "Larry" Scanlan, 61,
peacefully went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on
Monday, June 9, in Saint Joseph RMC-South Bend. He was preceded
in death by his mother, Larraine Eli, father Samuel Scanlan, and
brother, Ronald Scanlan. In his late 20s he chose to take on the
challenge of a wife and three young daughters, who he adopted and
raised as his own. He added one more daughter and in his late 40s
he remarried and took on and loved an additional daughter. He is
survived by his loving wife, Sharon; daughters, Kim (Mike) Becker,
Amy (Pat) Hechlinski and Tina (Sean) Frederick and
Trisha (Dan) Greenlee, all of South Bend; stepdaughters,
Lori (Able) Mendez of San Antonio, TX, and Ronda Ridenour
of Warsaw, IN; stepsons, Dion Ridenour of Wolcottville, IN, and
Sam Ridenour of San Bernardino, CA; and stepfather, John Eli
of Mishawaka; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Larry loved spending time with his grandchildren. Loved early
morning rides for coffee.
Larry began work in the lumber yard of the
South Bend Toy Co. in 1962 at the age of 16. He worked his way up
to plant manager and was still employed there when the company
closed in 1985. Larry held various positions in South Bend until
he retired in 1999 as a plant supervisor for Creative Dimension
in Nappanee. He loved golf cart rides at Yogi Bear Jelly Stone
Park in Pierceton. He used to love setting off fireworks with his
brother-in-law and fishing in the summer time. His secret
ambition was to become a Wise Guy. He constantly had
unconditional love for his children. He left his family his
wisdom, strength and love. The family would like to thank the
EMTs and firemen of the Mishawaka Fire Department, and the caring
staff of nurses and doctors at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical
Center's ICU unit, for their amazing thoughtfulness and care of
our father. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hello
Gorgeous!, 1130 Altgeld Street, South Bend, IN 46614, a local
non-profit organization founded by Larry's oldest daughter, Kim,
dealing with female cancer support.
Private family services will be held. Hahn
Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, is handling the
arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in Larry's name
to Hello Gorgeous! Of HOPE, Inc.
