SOUTH BEND - James C. Scanlan Sr., 89, of South 35th Street, died at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday in Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal. Mr. Scanlan retired from Swift & Co. Meat Packing as a sales manager after more than 40 years' service. He was born June 20, 1906, in Streeter, Ill., and lived in South Bend most of his life.

On April 25, 1924, in Chicago, he married Edith M. Varoni. She died April 1, 1994. He is survived by a son, James C. Jr. of South Bend.

He was a member of Holy Name Society of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., where a parish wake will be said at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to United Celebral Palsy.
