Memorial services are scheduled Sunday in the Sebring (Fla) Church of the Brethren for Galen B. Sargent, retired local educator, who died Thursday in the Florida city. He was 73. Sargent was the first principal at John Adams High School from 1940 to 1951. From 1951 to 1964 he served as business manager and later as assistant superintendent for business services for the South Bend public school system. He was also assistant to school Supt. Frank Allen.
Sargent was born Dec. 8, 1901, and was reared in Chicago. He graduated from Manchester College, North Manchester, Ind., in 1923, and later earned a masters degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. After teaching in Lakeville from 1923-25, Sargent came to South Bend in 1927 and remained here until 1964, when he retired. In his earlier days here Sargent also taught as Central Junior High School. He was active in church and community activities, including the YMCA locally.
Surviving is a son, Gene of near Sebring. Sargents wife
Sarah, died April 3 of last year. Memorials may be sent to the
Galen Sargent Scholarship Fund at Manchester College.
