Alfio A. Sapienza, 81, of Bittersweet Road, Mishawaka, Ind., died following a lengthy illness at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, in Hospice House. Alfio was born to a Catholic family on Sept. 21, 1919, in Sicily, Italy, and had lived in this country most of his life. Mr. Sapienza was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Grace (Puglisi) Sapienza, and by two sisters and a brother.
Alfio retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1965, and from the Federal Aviation Administration as a maintenance inspector in 1984. Among his hobbies were aviation and restoring antique, gasoline farm engines.
Mr. Sapienza married the former Constance Kalemba in Salina, Kan., on Dec. 7, 1943. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Jill Culberson of Mishawaka; a granddaughter, Carolyn Sanders of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a sister, Marie Curaba of Detroit, Mich.; and by a brother, Mario Sapienza of New York.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Bubb Funeral Chapel North is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437.
