SOUTH BEND - John S. Sanders Sr., 92, passed away on
Thursday morning October 9, 2008 in his home. He was born on
February 16, 1916 in Pontiac, Michigan and was a life-long
resident of South Bend, Indiana. He married Elsie M. Barson
on May 17, 1947 at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church where they
continued to be parishioners all of their lives. John served in
the Indiana State Guards during World War II and was a member of
the Civilian Conservation Corps out of Salt Lake City, Utah and
Southern Indiana. He continued to be an active member of the CCC
out of LaPorte. He was employed at Studebaker Corporation for 28
years and he retired from AM General Corporation in 1981 after 11
years. John had many interests. He was an avid sportsman and
athlete in his early years. He loved fishing, bowling, carpentry,
mechanics, gardening and caring for his home and yard. He was a
loving husband and father whose highest priority was providing
for his family. He was preceded in death by parents Joseph and
Helen (Paksi) Sandor; and his brother, Joseph (Donna) Sanders. He
is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Elsie, of 61 years;
two children, John (Hiede) Sanders Jr. of Wheaton, IL and Debbie
Sanders of Crown Point, IN; adoring granddaughter, Jennifer
Sanders of Indianapolis; brother, Charles (Irene) Sandor
of South Bend and many nieces and nephews. The family would like
to express their sincere gratitude to John's cardiologist, Dr.
John Katsaropoulos, and the many nurses and health care providers
from Memorial Home Care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2008 in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2-6 Sunday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue where a Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Hungary building fund.
