SOUTH BEND - Alexander Rowell, 84, of 1248 South Bend Ave., died at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Medical Center after an illness. Mr. Rowell was a retired construction worker for Local 645. He was born Aug. 8, 1909, in Mississippi and lived here since 1949, coming from Cairo, Ill.

On Oct. 24, 1937, in Sledge, Miss., he married Sarah Ellis. She died Sept. 7, 1991. Surviving are five sons, Spencer of Sacramento, Calif., Alexander Jr., Terry and Darrell, all of South Bend, and Chester of Muskegon, Mich.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Cornelius Pickens and Lillie Smith, both of Michigan.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Alford's Mortuary.
