Esther Rieder, 93, of North St.
Joseph Street, died after a brief illness on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in
her home. Esther was born June 15, 1908, in South Bend, Ind., to
Dr. Walter and Harriet (Campbell) Hager, who both
preceded her in death.
On Jan. 30, 1935, Esther married Leo P.
Rieder Esq., who preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1986.
Esther is survived by two sons, James L.
Rieder of Powell, Ohio, and William P. Rieder of New York, N.Y.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, Christopher Rieder,
Catherine Begley, Mary Beth McCarthy and Joanna
Rieder; and by six great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Rieder,
Sabrina and Annie Begley, and Alaina and Ethan McCarthy.
Esther was a 1928 graduate of the Bradford
Academy and a 1930 graduate of DePauw University. She was a
member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and of the First United
Methodist Church of South Bend. She was also active in the
Women's Auxiliary of Hearing and Speech of St. Joseph County, the
Antiquarian Society of St. Joseph County, and was a past
president of the Women's College Club. She also had served as a
volunteer at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services for Esther Rieder will be
held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the chapel of the First
United Methodist Church, South Bend. Burial will follow at
Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6
p.m. today in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street.
