MISHAWAKA - Bernard F. Riederer, 71, of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at his residence on Sunday, April 13, after an extended illness. Mr. Riederer was born Aug. 14, 1925, to Ann L. Schuh and Bernard B. Riederer of Manitowoc, Wis.
Surviving is his wife, Phyllis M. O'Neil, originally of Oconto, Wis., whom he married on Nov. 27, 1947. They were married for 49 years. He is also survived by his children; Catherine L. Besyner of Duncanville, Texas and her husband, James, Sue A. Hurlbut of Mishawaka, and Brian B. Riederer of South Bend; and three grandchildren. A sister, Virginia Pausig and her husband, Gerald of Avondale, Ariz. and a brother, Richard K. Riederer and his wife, Bonnie, of Sewickly, Pa. also survive. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother, Jerome Riederer.
Bernard was a member of the United States Navy for 2 1/2 years. His other accomplishments include a Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University and a Master of Science degree from Indiana University. He was a life member of the National Education Association, an honorary member of the Indiana State Teachers Assocation, a past president of the Mishawaka Rotary Club, and past president of the Ushers Club of St. Monica Catholic Church. Employed by the School City of Mishawaka from 1949 to 1985, Bernard taught math for 23 years, 17 of which he also coached track and four of which he also taught science, and served as vice principal for 13 years entirely at Beiger School. Since 1987, he served as vice president of LRT Plastics Inc., Elkhart.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, in St. Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Fr. William Sullivan officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka, where a wake service will be at 2:30 p.m. Bernard's final resting place will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
