Herbert E. Riedel, 84, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:35
a.m. Monday, October 30, 2006, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
Mr. Riedel retired from AM General in 1983 following more than 20
years of service and previously worked for the Studebaker
Corporation. He was born on November 24, 1921, in South Bend, IN,
to Clarence and Frances (Wiltfong) Riedel, and was a lifelong
resident. On July 11, 1942, in St. Louis, MO, he married Virginia
Chapman. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Virginia
Riedel; one daughter, Jill (Tom) Shaw of South Bend; one son,
Jack (Erma) Riedel of South Bend; four grandchildren, Rebecca
(Christopher) Cernak, Thomas Shaw Jr., Lorie (George) Charles and
Jack Eric Riedel; four great-grandchildren, Cory Charles, Keely
Charles, Lauren Cernak and Morgan Cernak. He was preceded in
death by his brother, Dale Riedel. Mr. Riedel was a veteran of
World War II. He served as an infantry sergeant in England from
April 1944 where he entered battle the day after D-Day and
returned home in December 1945. This summer, prior to becoming
ill, he fulfilled his one wish, which was to visit the World War
II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Mr. Riedel's greatest joys were
working with his tools and spending time with his family. Funeral
services will be held at 11:00 a.m. today, November 2, 2006, in
the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South
Bend. Rev. Jim Morse will officiate. Graveside services and
burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Friends
may call from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. today prior to services in the
funeral home. Contributions in memory of Herbert E. Riedel may be
made to the American Cancer Society, 601 W. Edison Road,
Mishawaka, IN 46545.
