George Henry Rice, Sr.

Mr. George Henry Rice, Sr., 76, dear
father, grandfather and brother who resided on Howard Street,
South Bend, Ind., passed away at 9:07 a.m. on Monday, March 20,
at Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born
to the union of the late Isaac and Kate (Lowery) Rice in
Hickman, Ky., on July 2, 1923. Coming from Hickman, he moved to
South Bend in 1946. In 1987 he was married to Ann Thurman.
Mr. Rice served his country in the United
States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1945, after serving
during World War II. Upon his discharge from the Navy he was
awarded the Victory Ribbon, the Europe-African-Middle East medal
with two stars, the Asiatic-Pacific medal with three stars, the
American Area medal, and the Point System Commendatory
commendation. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 9733 and also the American Legion Post 66. He was a retired
employee of the Forsey Construction Co.
Family members who survive along with his
wife Ann are four daughters, Charlene (Norris) Hughs of
Lexington, Ky., Johnny Mae Adams, Rhonda Rice-Forrest
and Shiela Brown, all of South Bend; three sons, George H.
(Kathy) Rice, Jr., and James Rice, both of South Bend, and Dennis
Reed of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren; one sister, Ella Mae White of Covena,
Calif.; and two brothers, Guy Rice of St. Louis, Mo., and Isaiah
Rice of Decatur, Ill.; along with a host of other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Rice.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on
Saturday, March 25, in Alford's Mortuary, where friends may call
one hour prior to the service. Alford's Mortuary has been
entrusted with professional arrangements.
