Rosie M. Redmon

 June 28, 1928 - April 9, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Redmon, Rosie Mae 81, of Goodland Avenue, was called to eternal rest on Friday, April 9, 2010, at 8:12 a.m. in her home in South Bend, Indiana, where her four children took care of her. Rosie Mae was born June 28, 1928, in Thornton, Mississippi, to the union of Sylvester Powell and Mary Bell (Larry) Powell. She received her formal education at Sweet Kingdom School in Thornton. She received Christ as her Savior at a very early age, and was baptized in 1941 at Sweet Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Jones where she served until leaving Thornton. She was united in holy matrimony to NC Coleman Sr. in 1945, and to that union two children were born. Coming from Thornton, Mississippi, she moved to Eudora, Arkansas, where she met and married Alex Redmon in the early 1950s. To their union three children were born. Upon leaving Eudora she moved to Chicago. After a short time there she later moved to South Bend, Indiana, in 1953, where she united with Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. David T. Tate. She later moved her membership to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Willie V. Williams. At New Hope, she served within the music department as president of the Senior Choir and also served on the Pastor's Aide Committee and Pastor's Anniversary Committee. In 1995 Rosie Mae became one of the founding members of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Lee H. Montgomery Jr. She served here faithfully until her health prevented her from attending. She was a member and president of the Choir, member of the Mother's Board, Missionary Department, and the co-chairperson of the Pastor's Anniversary Committee. Rosie loved to share her God-given talent of singing. She sang with the Divine Trio Gospel Singers, the South Bend Choral Union, the Northwestern Indiana District Missionary Baptist Association Choir, the Hill-Top Choir, and in her later years with the Fellowship Choral Union of South Bend Inc. She also sang "funny songs" with her children and sang "jumping songs" to the babies while she jumped them in her lap. Rosie had an unwavering love for the Lord and showed His love by giving to others. Her broad smile, unique laugh and quick wit endeared her to all who met her. She was one of a kind. When asked how she was feeling, she would say: "First straight and a quarter...not just like I oughta." In translation that meant "pretty good." Rosie Mae was not only talented musically, she was also gifted in the kitchen. She didn't know how to prepare "small" meals. She always prepared for those who "might" show up. For many years of her life, Rosie was a Domestic Engineer for several private families until her retirement. After her retirement, she was employed by REAL Services where she worked as a sorter at the Salvation Army where she befriended many of the residents there while teaching them the Word of God and taking them snacks to work for their energy. It gave her so much pleasure to serve God by serving her fellow man. Needless to say, she was greatly and deeply loved by a multitude of people who will keep her memory alive. She will be missed, oh yes, missed, because she left a mark on each and every heart who came to know "Rosie Mae." Those left to cherish and share memories of her are two daughters, Lee Agnes Coleman and Bettie Louise Redmon; two sons, NC Coleman Jr. (all of South Bend) and Eric Alex James (Robin) Redmon of Flint, Michigan; three sisters, Katherine Dillard of Chicago, Illinois, Ruby (Robert) Underwood of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Beatrice (Otis) Camper of Highland Falls, New York; eight grandchildren, Leroy (Olivia), Stephanie, Carlos (Theresa), Nikki (Anthony), Eric Jr., Jamar, Brittney and Rakeem; 25 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many, many special and close friends too numerable to list. Extended Family: adopted children, Marie White, Ollie Turner; Preston and Christine Chaney; L.J. Groves, JoAnn Hunter, and Gilbert Marsh; adopted sisters, Hattie Walker, Juanita Kyle and Nancie Stokes. Rosie Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Redmon; a son Sylvester Redmon; her parents, Sylvester Larry and Mary Bell Simmons; stepfather, David Simmons Sr.; brothers, David Simmons Jr., Palmo Lee Simmons Sr. and John Wesley Simmons. Funeral services for Mrs. Rosie Mae Redmon will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 1533 West Ewing Avenue. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West. Acknowledgments and condolences to the Redmon/Coleman family may be sent via e-mail to SouthBendTribune.com. Burial will follow funeral services at Highland Cemetery. The Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
