SOUTH BEND - Patricia Ann Rans, 75, of South Bend,
Indiana, passed away at 11:25 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2008, in
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. She was born on
May 27, 1933, in South Bend, IN, to Phillip and Anna Margaret (McCarthy)
Smith. On August 23, 1980, in South Bend, she married
Jefferson T. Rans, who survives. Also surviving are a
stepdaughter, Roxanne (Dwayne) Leake of South Bend; two
step-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Eileen Carlson of
South Bend, Edythe "Gerry" Rakowski of Mishawaka
and Helen Kiskowski of Mishawaka; several nieces and
nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Elizabeth
"Betty" Wilcut. Retiring after 22 years of
service from A&P Grocery, Pat then worked 13 years before
retiring for the University of Notre Dame Building Services
department. She was a wife, a sister, a godmother and an aunt.
She was devoted to her faith and the Catholic Church, and was a
member of St. Anthony dePadua Catholic Church. She dearly loved
her family and her dogs and they loved her in return. She had a
dry sense of humor and a very tender heart. Anything she
considered nonsense was dismissed with a flick of the wrist,
while the laugh of a child could bring a tear to her eye. She was
a lifelong resident of South Bend and a member of Howard Park
Senior Center and the TOPS program for many years. She enjoyed
bus trips and traveling, old time TV and movies. I Love Lucy was
a favorite.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, 2008, in St. Anthony dePadua Catholic Church, 2120 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend. Rev. Derrick Sneyd will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Friends may also visit in the church an hour prior to the service. Contributions in memory of Patricia Rans may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
