SOUTH BEND - Walter A. Ramenda, 83, of South Bend, passed
away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 4, in the Sanctuary at Holy
Cross, South Bend. He was born on April 21, 1925, in South Bend,
to the late Elizabeth (Holcman) and John Ramenda. On
February 7, 1946, in South Bend, he married Martha Turner,
who preceded him in death on August 14, 1992. Walt was also
preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Stanley Ramenda; two
sisters, Helen Sokol and Pauline Casper; and two
nephews, John and Mike Ramenda. Surviving Walt are his wife,
Catherine; a daughter, Pamela Jane Ramenda of South Bend; four
sisters, Louise Szabo of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Mary Wilson,
Stephanie (Ollie) Kuzmicz and Phyllis Bognar, all
of South Bend; numerous nieces and nephews. Walt started Ramenda
Masonry in the early 1950s with a beat-up pick-up truck and one
mortar mixer, building it to one of the most successful masonry
companies in Indiana. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member
of the Morris Park Country Club and the First Church of Christ
Scientist, South Bend. Walt was gentle and compassionate: a true
old-school gentleman, respected by all, and he will be greatly
missed.
Memorial services for Walt will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Services will be conducted by Dan Kemp. Cremation will take place in the Welsheimer Crematory and burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Indiana. The family would like to thank the staff at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross for all of their care, kindness and support they gave Walt.
