Br. Maynard (Raymond) Rabidoux, C.S.C., 87, died of an apparent heart attack on Tuesday, Sept. 18, in his residence at Columba Hall, Notre Dame, Ind.

He was born on April 29, 1914, in Bay City, Mich., the son of Gideon and Mable (Dulude) Rabidoux. A sister preceded him in death; a brother survives.

r. Maynard was educated in Catholic schools in Bay City and later at the University of Notre Dame. Before entering Holy Cross at Watertown, Wis., in March 1938, he worked at Lee & Cady Wholesale Grocers and Chevrolet Motors. He began his novitiate year in August 1938 at Rolling Prairie, Ind., made his first profession of vows a year later, and pronounced his perpetual vows on Aug. 16, 1942.

A meticulous specialist in commercial and clerical subjects and tasks, Br. Maynard was assigned to the staff of the Notre Dame bookstore from 1940-43, then worked in the auditor's office at the university from 1943-46. From 1946-48 he was on the staff of the provincial treasurer's office at Columba Hall, Notre Dame. In 1948 he became a staff member at Fr. Gibault School for Boys in Terre H aute, Ind., remaining there until 1966, at which time he went to Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio, where he helped staff the treasurer's office until 1974. From 1974-89 he was on the faculty/staff of Catholic Central High School, Monroe, Mich., and from 1989-99 the staff of Holy Cross High School, River Grove, Ill. He then retired to Columba Hall at Notre Dame.

Whether in his prayerful living out of the obligations of the religious life or in fulfilling his duties wherever employed, Br. Maynard unfailingly approached everything with scrupulous fidelity and intensity. His good humor and cheerful spirits offset his natural inclination toward a stubborn yet exemplary preservation of a conservative and highly principled observance of his way of life in Holy Cross, and the manner in which he accomplished the tasks assigned to him in house or school.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in St. Joseph's Chapel, the brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 933. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 3:30 p.m., with burial immediately afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds.
