Ralph J. Quimby, Jr., 74, a lifelong resident of South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness on Monday morning, Dec. 6, in the Regency Place Nursing Home. He was born on Feb. 21, 1925, in South Bend, to Ralph and Mary (Hoover) Quimby, Sr. He is survived by three daughters, Christy DeLaurelle and Genevieve Watson, both of South Bend, and Mary Lou Adams of Union, Mich.; two sons, Ralph "Butch" Quimby, III, of Richmond, Va., and Robert Quimby of Granger, Ind.; nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lillian Katona of Dade City, Fla., Mary L. Whiting of South Bend and Pat Reader of Indianapolis, Ind.; and by two brothers, Lester Quimby of South Bend and John Quimby of Dade City, Fla.
As a senior in high school Mr. Quimby won the Indiana State Wrestling Championship in the 105 pound weight class in 1942. He was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995. After graduation Mr. Quimby was drafted into the Army and was a paratrooper with the 713th Airborne Division during World War II. Returning to South Bend after the war, Mr. Quimby worked at Studebaker and retired from Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka, Ind.
Funeral services for Ralph Quimby will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 2718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, where Mishawaka V.F.W. Post 360 will conduct military graveside ceremonies. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home.
