MISHAWAKA - Virginia M. "Ginny" Powers, 83, of
Mishawaka, IN, died at 10:55 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2008, in
the Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center, South Bend, IN.
She was born on August 17, 1924, to the late Louis H. and
Florence E. (Farrow) Burkhardt in West Palm Beach,
FL, and had lived in South Bend since 1944, coming from Palm
Beach, FL. Mrs. Powers retired in 1971 from Powers Plumbing and
Heating, Inc., in South Bend, where she served as vice president
for 21 years.
On May 21, 1944, as Virginia Burkhardt, she
married Richard P. Powers in Palm Beach, FL. Along with her
loving husband, Richard of 63 years, she is survived by her three
sons, Richard P. (wife, Ching-Chun) Powers Jr. of Mt. Juliet, TN,
James L. (wife, Jo) Powers of Chatham, IL, William E. (wife, Sue
A.) Powers of South Bend, IN; seven grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Powers was a member of St. Anthony de
Padua Parish, a former member of Corpus Christi Parish, and a
charter member of St. John the Baptist Parish where she served as
past president of the Rosary Society. She was also a longtime
volunteer at the Leighton Center for Senior Health and the
College Football Hall of Fame. Virginia was an avid Notre Dame
fan, and was loved and cherished by all who knew her.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today,
Jan. 17, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive,
South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 18, in
St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, where friends and family
may also visit from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will take place at
Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Diabetes Association of St. Joseph County, 6910 North Main
Street, Suite 9, Mail Unit #10, Granger, IN 46530.
