Rev. Joseph I. Powers CSC, 64, of the
University of Portland, died at 9:05 a.m. today at Holy Cross
House, Notre Dame, after an illness of two years. He was born
Feb. 15, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived in Enid, Okla. Until
1931 when he entered the Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame. He
graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1937 and was
ordained a Holy Cross priest at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame
on June 15, 1941. He taught and studied history at Notre Dame
from 1941 to 1945. He also had studied at Harvard University,
Cambridge, Mass. and the University of Minnesota from 1945 to
1951. He taught for one year at Notre Dame before going to the
University of Portland where he was a professor of history, dean
of men and executive vice president and Dean of the College of
Arts and Sciences from 1951 until his retirement in 1978.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the
Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame with burial in the Community
Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Friday in Moreau
Seminary Chapel, where a wake service will be at 7:30 p.m.
Friday.
