Margaret Lucia Cox Potthast, 51, of
South Bend, Ind., died after a lengthy illness at 5 a.m. on
Thursday, Jan. 27, at home. She was born on Oct. 20, 1948, in
South Bend, to Lloyd and Virginia (Bell) Cox, who
preceded her in death. Margaret was a 1967 Penn High School
graduate, and received her R.N. degree from Purdue North Central
in 1981. She was a licensed nurse practitioner and worked as an
E.R. nurse for 16 years at Saint Joseph's Medical Center. She was
also employed as a nurse in the Notre Dame First Aid Station
during football games for the past 16 years. She was a nursing
instructor for Ivy-Tech for several years, and was on staff at
the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company at the time her illness
began. She was a Red Cross medical volunteer for over 15 years.
She was proud of earning her Master Gardener certification from
Purdue University, and labored with love in the many gardens she
created.
She is survived by her husband of 10 years,
John Paul Potthast; and two stepchildren, Eric and Lindsay
Potthast of Bloomington, Ind.; her sister, Lloydine (Cox) Miller
of South Bend, and three nieces, Jessica, Samantha and Callahan
Miller, all of South Bend; her brother, Norman Cox of Atlanta,
Ga., and three nieces, Norma Fickle of North Carolina,
Cheryl Vaughn and Debra Rippeto of the Atlanta
area; six great-nieces; and by an aunt, Marian Motry of
Big Rapids, Mich.
Cremation has taken place and there will be
no visitation as per her request. A memorial service will be held
at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545
N. Bendix Drive.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook
Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437.
