SOUTH BEND - Betty Jane Pond, 85, of Palm City, Florida, formerly
of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on February 12, 2010, at
Water's Edge. Born in South Bend, IN, to I. Garrett and Edith A.
Alber, Betty had been a resident of Piper's Landing in Palm City,
FL, for over 20 years before relocating to Sandhill Cove two
years ago. Betty is survived by her husband of 64 years, Cecil E.
Pond; son, Gary Pond, and his companion, Martha Barcus of South
Bend, IN; daughters, Linda Rea of Spring Lake, MI, and Constance
Hubbard and her husband, Glenn of New York, NY; grandchildren,
Jonathon Pond, Heather Pond, Adrienne Peterson and her husband,
Jeff, Cary Rea and his wife, Jessica, Eric Rea and his wife,
Stacey, Raph Hubbard and William Hubbard; and great-grandchildren
Rosemary, Rachel, Ryan, Allison and Colin. She was predeceased by
her twin brother, Dr. Robert J. Alber, DDS. Betty was involved in
myriad activities. She was a graduate of Epworth Memorial
Hospital School of Nursing in South Bend. Betty was a member of
Eastern Star, Alumni Association of Memorial Hospital and the
South Bend Service Guild. She also volunteered for the South Bend
Crippled Children's Society, the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
Association, and the Martin Memorial Hospital Neonatal Unit in
Stuart, FL. She and her husband enjoyed golf and bridge at the
Morris Park Country Club, South Bend, Chickaming Country Club,
Lakeside, MI, and Piper's Landing, Palm City. They were active in
YPO and CEO. Her husband, Cecil, is an entrepreneur who developed
Wheel Horse Lawn and Garden Tractors in South Bend where he also
served as a director on boards, including First Source Bank and
Memorial Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00
p.m. in Palm City Presbyterian Church, Palm City, FL, on
Saturday, March 20, and also at 11:00 a.m. in Unity Church of
Peace, South Bend, IN, on Friday, June 25. Memorial contributions
may be made to the Betty Alber Pond Nursing Scholarship, Memorial
Health Foundation, 615 North Michigan Avenue, South Bend, IN
