SOUTH BEND - Services for Louis J. Polman,
64, of 17685 Judy Lake Drive, who died at 11:30 a.m. Friday of
natural causes in his home, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred
Heart Basilica, Notre Dame. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley
Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from noon until 3 p.m.
Monday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive, and
from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Basilica, where a wake service
will be at 8 p.m., and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday before
services. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St.
Joseph County Inc.
Mr. Polman was president of Cole Associates
and chairman of the board emeritus. He was born Aug. 7, 1929, in
Mishawaka, and was a lifelong area resident.
On June 7, 1952, in South Bend, he married
Betty Lou (Becky) Becker. She survives with three
daughters, Nancy Ann Phelan and Linda Sue Polman, both of
Cincinnati, and Patti Polman of Boulder, Colo.; a son, Louis J.
III of Osceola; four grandchildren; his mother, Wilhelmina Polman
of South Bend; and a sister, Dorothy Kostielney of South
Bend.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Elks
Lodge 294, the basilica and many charitable and civic
organizations. He was a member of the American Society of
Engineers and Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. He served
on the board of directors for Consulting Engineers of Indiana
from 1980 to 1990 and was president from 1988 to 1989. He was on
the Technical Advisory Board of the Indiana Corporation for
Science and Technology and served on the Advisory Board for
Purdue University's Technical Assistance Program. He was also a
member of American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society
of Professional Engineers and Consulting Engineers Council. He
graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1952 with a degree
in civil engineering. He was a registered professional engineer
in nine states.
