SOUTH BEND - Walter Joseph Podemski, 59, of South Bend,
passed away at 1 PM Wednesday, October 29, in his home. He
retired as Sergeant in 1994 from the St. Joseph County Sheriff's
Department after 21 years of service. Walter was born on May 27,
1949, in South Bend, to Walter and Alice (Nadonly)
Podemski and was a lifelong resident. He was married to Mary (Johnsonbaugh)
Podemski, who preceded him in death on July 18, 2002. Mr.
Podemski is survived by two sisters, Janice K. (Merle) Borton
of South Bend and Susan P. Podemski of Locust Grove, Georgia; and
three nephews, Martin Borton and Scott Borton both of South Bend
and Wayne (Christy) Borton of Wintersville, NC; a niece, Korin Epps
of Streamwood, IL; and several grand nieces and nephews. Walter
graduated from Riley High School, South Bend in 1967. After his
induction into the force in 1973, he received the following
commendations from the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department:
attempting to save a drowning victim, April 1981; arrest of sex
offenders, August 1982 and apprehension of burglars, September
1989.
Masonic services will be held at 6:15 PM
Monday, November 3, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528
Mishawaka Ave, South Bend, where memorial services will follow.
Friends may visit with the family from 4 PM until time of
