Carl "C.J." Phillips, 87,
of Winding Wood Drive, South Bend, Ind., died on Friday morning,
March 30, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. CJ retired
from LaSalle Liquors and Berm-Murrman Roofing, South Bend, as a
salesman for many years. He was born on Jan. 9, 1914, in New
Hampton, Iowa, to Harry and Hannah (Ellefson) Phillips. CJ
was a member of Elks Lodge 235, the Morris Park Country Club, was
an avid bridge player, enjoyed sports, and was a World War II
Navy veteran.
In Waterloo, Iowa, he married Pearl Stauffer,
who survives. He is also survived by three nieces, Marilyn (Ron) Roberts
of Bothell, Wash., Eleanor (Vic) Lawrence of Encino,
Calif., and Joan (Richard) Bahmer of Boise, Idaho; a
nephew, John Lamb of Helena, Mont.; several cousins; and
by a brother, Albert Phillips of Stockton, Calif. He was
preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Jack, and by a
brother, Elver Phillips.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on
Monday, April 2, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson
(289-1000), with Rev. David M. Doane, pastor of Holy Trinity
Lutheran Church, South Bend. There will be no visitation.
