Hartulana A. Peters (March 16, 1921 - April 5, 2002)

Hartulana "Harty" A. Peters, 81, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Friday, April 5, in her home.

Harty was born in South Bend , Ind., on March 16, 1921, and was raised by her mother, Magdalena (Yandl), and stepfather, Andrew Reiner. Her father, John Vuckis, passed away when she was very young. Living here all her life in South Bend, Harty was a graduate of the old St. Mary's School and Washington High School. On Oct. 13, 1945, she married Joseph Peters. They were married for 49 years.

Harty had worked at Lee's Manufacturing, but is best remembered for owning her own sewing and monogramming business.

Harty was a very giving person. Over the years she sewed thousands of gifts for St. Vincent DePaul and made countless blankets for the School Age Mothers program.

Harty was a passionate flower gardener. With her help and cuttings from her garden she started many gardens for family, friends and neighbors. Harty gave her talent and skill in gardening, sewing, and her witty sense of humor to everyone.

Harty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; and by a son, Joseph John Peters, who passed away when he was eight.

She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Lukas of Bloomington, Ind.; and by two grandchildren, Saylan and Lana Lukas. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy DiGann; four nieces, Jan DiGann of Houston, Texas, Marybeth DiGann of South Bend, Ginna Linnemann of Hebron, Ky., and Pat LeMaire of South Bend; and by a nephew, John DiGann of Plano, Texas.

Visitation for Harty will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street. A Rosary will be said at 5:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday in St. Matthew Cathedral. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Memorials in Harty's name may be made to the School Age Mother's program of the South Bend Community School Corporation or to St. Vincent DePaul.
