SOUTH BEND - Robert Morris Peltz, 84, passed away after a
long illness on Monday, Dec. 10th, in his residence surrounded by
his loving family. Born to Harry and Sarah Peltz in Audobon, NJ,
on Oct. 19, 1923, he spent his early years in New Jersey.
He met his wife, Lila Slutzky, a student of
the University of Miami and a lifelong resident of South Bend,
who convinced Robert to move to South Bend. Robert and Lila were
blessed with two sons, James Peltz of South Bend and Rick Peltz
(Emily) of Carmel, IN; two daughters, Terry (Alan) Feldbaum
and Judy (Richard) Wein of South Bend. He is survived by
eight grandchildren, Amber Peltz, Susan Peltz, Rachel Wein, Emily
Wein, Samuel Wein, Sarah Feldbaum, Daniel Feldbaum and Abigail
Peltz; and his only brother, Bernard Peltz of Vineland, NJ.
Robert was a kind and special person,
well-liked by all who knew him. He was a devoted father and
grandfather, always giving encouragement and a warm smile to all
of the family's endeavors. Robert was an exceptional athlete. A
great swimmer, he became a lifeguard at the beaches of Atlantic
City, NJ. In the Marines, where he served in the Pacific, he
participated as a boxer. After his years in the Marines, he
graduated from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, where
he played football and was a diver on the swim team. He became an
avid bowler and softball player in his early years in South Bend.
His passion for athletics continued into tennis, a sport he
excelled at well into his late 70s. Robert was vice president of
the Slutsky Peltz Plumbing and Heating Company of South Bend for
over 40 years. He was respected and liked by all of his employees
over this period. His community activities include Temple Beth
El, B'nai B'rith Men, the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley,
Free Mason, and the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors
Association of St. Joseph Valley. His real devotion was to his
children and grandchildren. He made it a priority to attend all
of the children's and grandchildren's sporting events, even
before it was usual to do so. He rarely missed a swim meet or
tennis match. He was always there with a kiss and a smile. His
kindness and sweet personality were his trademark, and that is
what most truly will be missed.
Funeral services for Robert will be at 1
p.m. today, Dec. 12, in the McGann Hay Funeral Home on Ironwood
Drive. Burial will follow at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Sinai Synagogue, Temple Beth El, to
the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley or to the Alzheimer's
Society of Indiana.
