Pegues

The soul departed in the Lord does not die, it returns to God,
who is the Giver of Life. SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Garnette Pegues, 87,
was born on February 25th 1923, to the late Claudia and Sultan
Thomas Sr. in Memphis, Tennessee. At a young age the family moved
to Oxford Mississippi where she received her secondary education
at Oxford Training School. After graduation she went to Tuskegee
Institute in Alabama. She continued her education in South Bend
and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education
from Indiana University South Bend. After 19 years of teaching,
Mrs. Pegues retired from the South Bend School Corporation. She
accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized while in
Oxford. After moving to South Bend she joined St. John and was a
faithful member for over 54 years. She wanted to make sure all of
her children and grandchildren knew the Lord and took them to
worship as well. April 17, 1944, she was united in matrimony to
James Augustus Pegues. In the 49 years they were married, they
were blessed with five children. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Sultan and Claudia Thomas; husband, James A. Pegues;
brother, Sultan Thomas (Daisy); sisters, Juanita Douglas and
Louella Oliver; and daughter, Marilyn Pegues. Garnette leaves to
cherish her memory three daughters and one son, Claudia Jean May
of Kissimmee, FL, Marsha Scott of Indianapolis, IN, Hester Boyd
(Charlie) of Atlanta, GA, James Pegues of South Bend, and
stepson, Quitman Slack of Detroit, MI. She also leaves 14
grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs.
Garnette Pegues will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010, in the
Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St.,
South Bend, IN. Visitation will begin @ 10:00 a.m.; funeral
services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow funeral
service at Highland Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the
