SOUTH BEND – Gerard A. Pauwels, 78, of North Johnson Street, died at 5:35pm Sunday in St Joseph’s Medical Center after an illness.

Mr. Pauwels retired in 1979 from O’Brien Corp. He was born July 7, 1914, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. On April 24, 1937, he married Irene Wojtysiak.

She survives with three daughters, Christine Pauwels of South Bend, Mary Abaray of Evansville IN, and Catherine Stradtner of Jasper IN; four sons, Kenneth of Chapel Hill NC, Michael of Austin TX, Lawrence of Mishawaka and Leo of South Bend; sixteen grandchildren; a sister, Madeline Farrington of South Bend and two brother, Edward of South Bend and Andrew of Bloomington IN. He was a member of O’Brien Retirees Club and Diamond Lake Fishing Club.

Services will be at 11am Wednesday in St Stanislaus Catholic Church. Burial will be in St Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8pm Tuesday in St Joseph Funeral Home, where a combined rosary will be said at 4pm by the parish and Confraternity of Holy Rosary Society. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Cross Missions or St Vincent DePaul Society.
