Emery Papp

 SOUTH BEND - Emery "Jim" Papp, 71, of South Bend, IN passed away at 4:55 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008, in Hospice House, South Bend. He was born on September 4, 1936, in South Bend, IN to the late George and Mary (Philips) Papp.

 

On October 3, 1959, in Granger, IN he married Geraldine (Goff) Papp, who survives. Mr. Papp is survived by his wife of 48 years, Geraldine; five sons, Michael (Leanne) Papp of South Bend, IN, Daniel (Margaret) Papp of Pinehurst, NC, Thomas "T.J." Papp of South Bend, IN, Timothy (Shannon) Papp of South Bend, IN and Jonathan Papp of Mishawaka, IN; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Papp, James Riley Papp, Kathryn Papp, Molly Papp, Greyson Papp, Seth Papp, and Payton Papp. A sister, Marge Jurkaites of South Bend, and a brother, Joseph Papp of South Bend, also survive him. Five sisters, Wilma Bentzler, Irene Ballou, Mary Geyer, Ethel Clugston, and Helen Sardas; and four brothers, Frank Bokory, Stephen Bokory, George Papp, and Louis Papp all preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Papp retired in 1997 after 23 years of service employed by the United States Government, Department of the United States Army, in Civil Service. He also retired as Command Sergeant Major after 39 years with the United States Army Reserve. Mr. Papp was a member of American Legion Post 50, South Bend, past Treasurer of the Pioneer Automobile Association, and past member of the National Model Railroad Association. He was also a member of St. Matthew Cathedral.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami, South Bend. Rev. Michael Heintz will officiate. Military graveside services and burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.
