Julius E. Papai, 81, of Rockne Drive, South Bend, Ind., died unexpectedly at 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
He was born on Sept. 2, 1915, in Diver-non, Ill., and lived in the South Bend area most of his life. On May 6, 1944, in Elkhart, Ind., he married Rose T. Cittadine, who preceded him in death on May 27, 1973.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Thomas) Weglowski of Mishawaka, Ind., and Kathleen (James) Dowiat of Edwardsburg, Mich.; two sons, Richard (Celeste) Papai of Cassopolis , Mich., and Randal (Jennifer) Papai of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tracey and Todd Dowiat of Edwardsburg, and Nicholas Papai of Cassopolis; three step-grandchildren, Renee (Jeffrey) Lawler, Richard Weglowski, both of Granger, Ind., and Zakaria Johnston of Mishawaka; a sister, Elsie (Stanley) Kwaseski of Niles, Mich.; and his longtime companion, Bernice Toth of South Bend.
Mr. Papai worked for Studebaker Corp. for 29 years. He was the current owner and operator of Julius Barber Shop, located on Lincoln Way West in South Bend.
He was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church; the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 599, Elkhart; the American Legion, Pulaski Post 356; and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 2606.
He served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road. A wake prayer service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Entombment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
