John A. Ort

SOUTH BEND - John A. Ort, 76, of Poppy Road, South Bend, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Saturday May 18th in Memorial Hospital after becoming ill at his residence. Mr. Ort was born on June 1, 1925 in South Bend and was a lifetime resident of Greene Township.

On November 24, 1945 in South Bend he married the former Eleanor M. Harman who survives. Also surviving are a daughter; Laura Lee (Kenneth) Bogucki, South Bend and two sons; Gary E. (Sandy) Ort and Hal W. (Linda) Ort both of South Bend. Six grandchildren; Edward, Michelle, Tamera, Tricia, Jeffrey and Chris Ort and a great grandchild; John Stanley Ort. Two sisters; Ruth Wesolek and Eva (Larry) Karczewski both of South Bend. A sister-in-law; Aleta Haslinger, of Holiday, Fla. and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Ort was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

At the time of his death, he was still farming being one of the most popular dairy and grain farmers in the area. John also retired as a school bus driver after 43 years with the South Bend Community School Corporation. John will be remembered by his warm smile and friendly manner. Spending the day on a tractor from sunrise to sunset was his passion as well as his love for his wife of 56 years and the devoted love for his entire family. He will be missed by not only family but numerous friends, church family and all who ever knew him. Mr. Ort served 30 years on the Greene Township Advisory Board, Charter member of Greene Township Lions Club, and a member of Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church.

Visitation hours will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday May 21st in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23 South Bend. 0Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday May 22nd at Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church and friends will be received one hour prior to service time in the church. Pastor Charles Ternet will officiate. Burial to follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery. The family request that all memorial contributions be made to Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church, 24535 W. Roosevelt Road, South Bend, IN, 46614.
