SOUTH BEND - Richard A. Opfer, 72, of 1849 Inglewood Place, South
Bend, Indiana, passed away of natural causes at 7 a.m. Friday,
February 5, 2010, in his home. He was born on March 6, 1937, in
Waukon, IA. He had lived in South Bend since 1971, coming from
Grand Rapids, MI. He was a US Army veteran, having served in the
Vietnam Conflict, and was a member of the Fulkerson Park Baptist
Church in Niles, MI. Richard worked as a retail salesman. On July
4, 1959, in Dowagiac, MI, Richard married Sue Opfer, who survives
in South Bend. Also surviving are sons, Brian Opfer of New
Carlisle, David (Charla) Opfer of South Bend and Jonathan Opfer
of Texas; a daughter, Becki (Jeremy) Bolles of St. Francis, MN;
and a sister, Dorothy (Vern) Borgert of Sherwood, MI; and 17
grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. today,
February 10, 2010, in Fulkerson Park Baptist Church, Niles, MI,
with Rev. Brian Hedges of the church officiating. Friends may
call two hours prior to services in the church. Burial will take
place at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Fulkerson Park Baptist Church or
to Life Action Ministries
