South Bend Tribune 2/19/1998
Harry Richard Onax, 74, of Addison
Street, South Bend, Ind., died unexpectedly of natural causes at
2:50 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, in his home. Harry was born to
Ignatious and Mary Olejniczak on July 9, 1923, in South Bend, who
have both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by
a son, Kevin, and by a brother, Louis. Harry was a veteran of
World War II, having honorably served with the United States Army
from 1942-1945, and the United States Air Force from 1945-1949.
He retired from Notre Dame and Martin's Supermarkets. Harry was a
wonderful father and devoted grandfather.
He leaves to carry on his tradition of
unselfish giving two sons, Kent Onax and Keith Onax, both of
South Bend; three daughters, Kathleen Schumacher of
Mishawaka, Ind., Karen Troyer of Basalt, Colo., and Kay
Stafford of Mishawaka; two sisters, Henrietta Harsanyi of
Mishawaka and Mary Jane Fisette of Edwardsburg, Mich.; two
brothers, Benjamin Manning of Ventura, Calif., and Matthew
Manning of Mequon, Wis.; and by 19 grandchildren. His
grandchildren were the light of his life. Harry enjoyed bowling,
fishing, golfing and Notre Dame ice hockey. For many years he
operated the Zamboni at the hockey games.
Cremation will take place and there will be
no visitation. However, a remembrance gathering will take place
from 3 to 6 p.m. on March 15 at Castle Manor in Merrifield Park,
Mishawaka. Since his children and grandchildren were such an
important part of Harry's life, the family asks that memorial
contributions be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 435
Limestone, Indianapolis, IN 46202. Granddaughter Kelly summed up
her grandpa's life best when she said, ''Grandpa never did
anything for himself, he always helped other people.''
