NOTRE DAME - Brother
Thomas Francis O'Malley, CSC, 68, an educator for many years,
died at Dujarie House, Notre Dame. He was born in Cleveland,
Ohio, to Thomas and Mary Rose (Kelly) O'Malley in 1940. He
attended St. Edward High School, class of 1958, in Lakewood. He
joined the brothers of the Holy Cross that summer, spent two
months at Watertown, Wisconsin, then began his novitiate year and
made his first profession at St. Joseph's Novitiate in August
1959. He then began his studies at St. Edward's University,
Austin, Texas, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1962, the
same year he made final profession. Br. Thomas' first assignment
after graduation was to the staff at St. Charles Boys Home in
Milwaukee for a year, and then he joined the faculty at Cathedral
High School in Indianapolis for 10 years, where he was the
assistant principal for the last three years until 1973. During
the summers, Br. Thomas studied and earned a Master of Education
degree from Loyola University, Chicago, in 1969. In 1973
Br. Thomas moved to
Chicago to join the faculty at Holy Cross High School in River
Grove as a counselor for two years and then to Holy Trinity High
School as the Guidance Director for five years, becoming the
assistant principal for the next two years. In 1982 Br. Thomas
moved to Notre Dame where he served as assistant rector of
Cavanaugh Hall and then became the rector of Sorin Hall for four
years. In 1988 Brother Thomas joined the staff at Boysville of
Michigan in Clinton where he worked for eight years, the last
three serving as the community superior until 1996. He joined the
faculty at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron for a year. In
1997 he became the director of Religious Education, first at St.
Bartholomew Church in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, then at Mary's
Church in Hudson, Ohio, and he served at the Division of Aging in
Lakewood, Ohio. In 2000 Br. Thomas moved to Notre Dame to serve
in the Province Development Office and resided at Columbia Hall.
Unfortunately, he developed Alzheimer's Disease and in 2003, he
moved to Dujarie House where he was cared for by his many friends
on the nursing staff until his death, shortly after celebrating
Christmas with his community.
Visitation will be held today, December 30, in the Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel, Schubert Villa-Dujarie House complex, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will follow at 11 a.m. with interment afterward at the St. Joseph's Cemetery of the Village.
