Rev. Francis J. O’Hara CSC, 84, of Holy Cross House, died there at 3 a.m. today after a lengthy illness. He was born Jan. 16, 1899 in Marion, Ind. and attended St. Paul’s Parochial School there, and Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame. On Oct. 6, 1920 he made hid first profession of vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1922. After theological studies at Holy Cross College in Washington DC, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1926 at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame.

 

Father O’Hara received his Ph. D. in psychology in 1929 from Catholic University of America and spent 40 years teaching at colleges and universities founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross. He first taught at the University of Notre Dame from 1927 to 1930, and later from 1956 to 1961. He also taught at St. Edward’s University, Austin, Tex. from 1930 to 1946; at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. from 1946 to 1948 and 1959 to 1960; and at Stonehill College, North Easton, Mass. in 1848 to 1949. The educator also served the former Holy Cross Central School of Nursing in South Bend from 1961 to 1964, and published a book, “Psychology and the Nurse”, which went through many editions. He served as chaplain to the Holy Cross Brothers at St. Edward’s University from 1964 to 1970, at which time he retired to Holy Cross House, where he resided until his death.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Moreau Seminary Chapel. Friends may call from 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Moreau Seminary Chapel, where a wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, on the campus.
