Sister Justine Marie, CSC (Joanne Marie O'Boyle), 71, was born in Washington, D.C., on July 27, 1929, daughter of Gardner J. O'Boyle and Justine Monahan O'Boyle. Sister died unexpectedly on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001. She is survived by her sisters, Janet (George) Zambon of Silver Spring, Md., and Justine (Joseph) Veith of Rockville, Md.; her brother, James Gardner (Kay) O'Boyle of Washington, D.C.; nieces and nephews; and members of a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister, Jane (Anthony) Millers.

 

Sister Justine Marie entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross from Washington, D.C., on Feb. 2, 1949, and made first vows on Feb. 2, 1951. From 1951-62, Sister was an elementary and high school teacher in New York City, Batavia, N.Y., and Kensington, Md. In following years she served as director of the dietary department of Holy Cross Hospital of Silver Spring, Md., Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind., and Christ House, Washington, D.C. Sister also served as the administrator of St. Alphonsus Hospital, Boise, Idaho, and was on the administrative team of Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Saint Angela Hall, Kensington, Md., and the Eastern Regional Council, Mount Rainier, Md. Her love for the poor led her to minister to homeless men recuperating from medical emergencies at Christ House, Washington, D.C., to pregnant women who were homeless at Helena House, Silver Spring, Md., and the weekly parish meal for the homeless in Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Bethesda, Md.

 

Sister Justine Marie earned her bachelor of science degree in foods and nutrition from New York University in 1958, and her master of science degree in dietetics from Massachusetts General Hospital in 1983. Health concerns brought her to Saint Mary's Convent early this year where she participated in the ministry of prayer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Wake services will be at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral Mass will be in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 2, followed by interment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
