Amelia K. Nyers, 94, of
Cardinal-Meridian Rehab Center, passed away at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday,
Feb. 11, in the rehab center. Amelia was born on April 29, 1908,
in Benwood, W.Va., to Stephen and Christina (Tucsek)
Nyers. As a young girl, Amelia worked as an usher at the Granada
Theatre when it was first built. She later worked for several
years as a cashier at the Indiana Theatre. During World War II
she worked in Pittsburgh at the home office of the William Penn
Association. She was a writer for their newspaper. She had a deep
interest in writing and had a book of her poems published. On her
return to South Bend, Ind., she opened a studio where she taught
tap dancing, ballet, and baton twirling. After retirement she
continued with teaching dancing at Forever Learning to senior
citizens. They would perform at the White Water Rapids beside
Century Center.
She is survived by two sisters, Louise Garman
of Granger, Ind., and Margaret Horvath of Edwardsburg,
Mich.; a brother, Alex (Irma) Nyers of South Bend; and by 21
nephews, 12 nieces and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.
Amelia was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Frankel,
Christine Frankel, Helen Horvath, Irene Molnar and Agnes Bralick;
and by two brothers, Stephen Nyers Jr. and Louis Nyers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, in Our Lady of Hungary
Catholic Church. Cremation will follow, with burial at Sacred
Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to
8 p.m. today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue,
where a Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions
may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Church.
