Crash Kills Two in Area
MICHIGAN CITY DRIVER, LOCAL WOMAN DIE
South Bend Motorist Is in Critical Condition
Traffis accidents took the lives of two persons on Northern
Indiana highways Wednesday night. The victims: MRS.
GENEVIEVE NOWICKI, 40 of 414 Warren St., who was killed instantly
in a crash on Ind 223, two miles northeast of Crumstown near
Peach Rd. about 10:40 oclock. MILTON JOHN RITCHEY,
33, of 414 Dewey St., Michigan City, died of injuries suffered in
an accident on U.S. 35, two and a half miles north of
LaPorte, about 9:45 oclock. The driver of the car in
which Mrs. Nowicki was riding, John Peter Korytkowski, 49, of
2010 Western Ave., is reported in critical condition in Memorial
Hospital. He suffered multiple fractures and head injuries when
the car careened 142 feet off the highway, bounced back onto the
road, overturned and slid 62 feet on its side. Deputy
Sheriffs Abraham Pomeranz and Frank Parry said Korytkowski
apparently was driving too fast to negotiate a turn. He was
thrown from the car into the yard of the home of John Naiepinski,
Crumstown Road. Mrs. Nowicki was thrown to the pavement.
Dr. Edward S. Sh??y, St. Joseph County coronor, said Mrs. Nowicki
suffered a skull fracture and crushed chest. He ruled the death
accidental. She was the countys third traffic victim of
1955. At this time a year ago, 14 traffic deaths had been
recorded. Korytkowski was not taken to a room in the
hospital until morning. Hospital attendants explained that his
condition was too critical to allow his being moved from the
emergency room. Native of Terre Coupe. Mrs. Nowicki
was born in Terre Coupe Dec. 20, 1914, and came to South Bend
from that community 39 years ago. Her husband, John, died Aug. 1,
1951. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Rose Zielinski, South Bend;
five sisters, Mrs. Mary Janiak, Mrs. Martha Nowicki and Mrs.
Lucille Eck, all of South Bend; Mrs. Anne Janiak, Mishawaka, and
Mrs. Josephine Rounds, Walkerton; and a brother, Edward
Zielinski, South Bend. Friends may call after 7 p.m.
Saturday in the St. Joseph Funeral Chapel. Services will be held
at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Adalberts Catholic Church with
Very Rev. Msgr. Ignatius J. Gapczynski, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Polish Cemetery.
