SOUTH BEND -- Charles Peter Nix, 90,
of South Bend, passed away early Thursday morning, November 8,
2007, in Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, South Bend.
Chuck was born June 12, 1917, in Mishawaka, a son of the late
John M. and Helen (Eckstein) Nix. He grew up in Mishawaka,
and on September 14, 1940, he married Virginia M. Siddles. For
most of their married life, the couple made South Bend their
home.
Chuck served his country in the Army Air
Force during World War II. In his earlier years he was employed
at Ball Band. For 31 years, Chuck was a mail carrier with the
Post Office in South Bend.
He was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral and
The Holy Name Society. Chuck and Virginia were chairpersons of
the St. Matthew Harvest House. He was an avid golfer and when he
could, golfed every day. Chuck scored a hole-in-one at Erskine
Golf Course. He was a handyman and even built a house with a
friend. Chuck enjoyed traveling. He was a very kind person and
will be remembered for the great care he gave his mother-in-law.
Chuck's surviving family includes his wife
of 67 years, Virginia; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lang
(Michael Hettinghouse) of Granger; a son, Gary Charles Nix
of South Bend; two grandchildren, Michael Lang (Lisa) and Timothy
Lang; and four great-grandchildren, Sarah and Justin Lang, and
Elizabeth and Skyler Lang. Chuck was preceded in death by three
brothers, Paul, Jerome and Lawrence Nix; and four sisters, Edith
Nix, Virginia Nix, Martha Michels and Dorothy Gerndt.
Friends may spend time with Chuck's family
on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. in Thallemer, Goethals & Wells
Funeral Home, 503 W. Third Street, Mishawaka, where the rosary
will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will be Monday from 12:30
to 1:30 p.m. in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South
Bend. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday,
beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the church, with Rev. Michael Heintz
officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery,
Mishawaka.
Contributions in Chuck's memory may be given
to St. Matthew Cathedral. Envelopes are available in the funeral
home and church.
