Clem L. Niezgodski

November 21, 1899 - December 7, 1967

 

Clem Niezgodski, 68, Ex-Councilman, Dies

Clem L. Niezgodski, 68, of 3918 Brentwood Dr., who served 16 years as 2nd District Councilman; died at 5:35am today in St Joseph's Hospital after a brief illness.

 

Active in Democratic politics for 25 years, Niezgodski was elected president of the City Council for three terms.  He served as councilman from 1939-1955.

 

Niezgodski lost his bid for re-election because of an intra-party squabble that saw the West Side Democratic & Civic Club endorse the late Joseph T. Kroll for 2nd District councilman in the primary.

 

He retired from the Bendix Corp. in August 1965, after working there 33 years.  From 1922-1934 he was part owner of the Niezgodski Bros. Plumbing & Heating Co.

 

Funeral on Saturday

Niezgodski was born on November 21, 1899, in South Bend.  On May 19, 1925, he married Helen Slomski, who survives.  Also surviving are two sons, Robert C. and Cornelius R., both of South Bend; five grandchildren; a brother, Alex Sr., of South Bend; and two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Konya and Margaret Lamenski, both of South Bend.

 

Friends may call after 7pm today in the Kaniewski & Sons Funeral Home.  Services will be at 9am Saturday in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with Rev. Sigmund A. Jankowski, CSC, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in St Joseph Cemetery.

 

He was a veteran of WW I and was a member of American Legion Post 357; the West Side, Central and Northwest Democratic & Civic Clubs; the St Stanislaus Society and Holy Name Society.  He also was a former member of the United Auto Workers Union
