Fred L. Nickerson, age 87, of Kenilworth Road, South Bend, passed away September 3, 1999, in Hospice House of St. Joseph County following a brief illness. Mr. Nickerson was born in New Carlisle on November 10, 1911, to Ross and Arwilda (Slocum) Nickerson.

On March 1, 1947, Fred married Betty McKee at the Willow Creek Church in Mishawaka. Mrs. Nickerson survives along with three sons, Gary Nickerson of South Bend, Scott Nickerson of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Jeff Nickerson of South Bend; a daughter, Sue Zimmerman of Elkhart; a sister, Alice Gast of South Bend; and 7 grandchildren, Emily Nickerson, Maggie Nickerson, Rachel Nickerson, Lydia Nickerson, Andrea Mills, Cassie Mills, and Austin Mills. Preceding Mr. Nickerson in death were his parents; three brothers, Merle, Guy, and Elvis Nickerson; and a sister Beatrice Nickerson.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, 1999, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola, with services to follow at 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home as well. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, in Osceola. Mr. Nickerson was a graduate of New Carlisle High School. He worked as a tool and gauge inspector for Bendix Corporation for 34 years until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Nickerson was a member of the UAW Local #9. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
